Effect of Atmospheric Dust on Interannual Variability in the Martian

چکیده

Mars Observer Camera (MOC) observations from Mars Global surveyor (MGS) revealed that the Residual South Polar Cap (RSPC) consists of several units that show evidence of deposition and erosion with characteristic times on the order of ~ 100 years [1]. These authors suggested that significant changes observed in the RSPC between MY 9, when Mariner 9 observed the cap,, and MY 12, observed by Viking, represent deposition of a new CO2 layer following erosion of a previous layer(s) by unidentified processes (Figure 1).

Modeling the Martian dust cycle 2. Multiannual radia- tively active dust transport simulations

Multi-annual dust transport simulations have been performed using a Mars general circulation model containing a dust transport scheme which responds to changes in the atmospheric state. If the dust transport is ‘radiatively active’ the atmospheric state also responds to changes in the dust distribution. This paper examines the suspended dust distribution obtained using different lifting paramet...

Dust-related interannual and intraseasonal variability of Martian climate using data assimilation

Introduction: Data assimilation has been applied in several studies [Montabone et al., 2005; Lewis et al., 2005; Montabone et al., 2006a; Montabone et al., 2006b; Lewis et al., 2007; Wilson et al., 2008; Rogberg et al. 2010] as an effective tool with which to analyze spacecraft observations and phenomena (e.g., atmospheric tides, transient wave behavior, effects of clouds in the tropics, weathe...

Interannual and seasonal behavior of Martian residual ice-cap albedo

The Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA), functioning as a high-resolution radiometer, has observed several appearances of the Martian residual ice caps. We examine these data to quantify both seasonal behavior and interannual differences. The northern residual cap (NRC) was found to be mostly stable with the exception of one, previously identified, region of strong variability. Interannual chan...

Interannual Variability of the Mars Thermosphere: New Simulations and Comparisons with Recent Mars Datasets

Detailed studies exist that explore the global, seasonal, and interannual variations of the Martian lower atmosphere (below 90 km) [e.g. Liu et al., 2003]. Key findings indicate that observed temperatures are quite repeatable from one Mars aphelion season to the next. Conversely, perihelion temperatures can change radically on an interannual basis, depending on the timing and intensity of dust ...

An assessment of the global, seasonal, and interannual spacecraft record of Martian climate in the thermal infrared

[1] Intercomparison of thermal infrared data collected by Mariner 9, Viking, and Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) is presented with a specific focus on air temperatures, dust opacities, and water ice opacities. Emphasis is placed on creating a uniform data set to most effectively reduce interinstrument biases and offsets. The annual cycle consistently shows a strong asymmetry about the equinoxes, wit...
